CONSCIOUS BREATHING 5 AMAZING BENEFITS.

elsieredfern@gmail.com · · Leave a Comment

We take our first breath, we take our final breath. And in between the two, contains the cycle of life. Breath Awareness Matters! Conscious breathing 5 amazing benefits that will help you gain awareness. Today you will learn, how your respiratory system is unique, how toxins are eliminated through your breath, the amazing benefits of breathing through your nose, how the breath is the bridge between the mind and body, and how conscious breathing can help relieve pain.

Did you notice that all self-care tools and techniques begin with conscious breathing? So it’s important to understand and gain awareness of how your respiratory system (your breath) works for you and also with you.

Along with the many benefits of conscious breathing, I’ve also included a “Bonus Exercise“.  A conscious breathing exercise that will enable you to support your immune system naturally.

If you’re curious about personal development and have a desire for growth and learning, self-awareness is the key to change. Because self-awareness allows you the possibility of changing something that doesn’t feel good. I truly believe that self-awareness begins with conscious breathing.

Become aware of your breath, so that with each inhale you claim life, and with each exhale you release it. And with each inhale you are activating your central nervous system and as you exhale you are regulating it.

Your Respiratory System is Unique.

Breathing is the only system in your body that is both automatic ( controlled by your autonomic nervous system –  we breathe without having to think about it). But our breath is also under our control, we can hold our breath or slow down our breathing when we need to – This is conscious breathing. Conscious breathing is an invitation for you to take part in your own life,  through your breath. It is an opportunity for you to take the time, to tune into your inhale and your exhale and become more aware of your breath.

Monk Sitting in Meditation - Pausing

Pausing in Meditation

“Practice pausing often”…..

You don’t need to leave your room, remain seated at your table, and listen. Learn to become quiet and still and solitary.  Just listen to your breath, as it flows gently in and out. This practice will allow you to become more self-aware and go beyond the turbulence of your inner dialogue to connect with the present moment. It is our way to connect mind and body.

Conscious Breathing 5 Amazing Benefits.

Eliminates Toxins.

It is a fact that you eliminate approximately 70% of toxins from your body through your lungs. Deep slow breathing flushes the excess carbon dioxide from your body and replaces it with fresh cell energizing oxygen.

 Nasal Breathing.

When you breathe through your nose there’re two advantages. Firstly the air is warmed before it gets to your lungs. Secondly, nitric oxide is produced in the nasal sinuses and carried to the lungs during nasal breathing. Nitric oxide is known to be broadly antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial. Nitric oxide also helps to open up our nasal passages and the bronchiole (passageways) in the lungs. And it helps to dilate your blood vessels so that oxygen can be properly distributed throughout your body.

So become conscious of your breath and use gentle nasal breathing often. This will raise nitric oxide levels in your airways and your blood to optimize the oxygen going to your cells.

Connecting mind and body.

Your breath is a way to connect your mind and your body. It is like a bridge. This is seen at its best, in the practice of mindfulness, meditation, and EFT emotional freedom technique). Mindfulness involves taking control of your breath and using conscious breathing methods, in which you become intensely aware of what you’re sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment, just connecting mind and body with compassion. Conscious breathing methods are also used in Meditation, a reflection exercise,  which uses the breath as a way to focus your attention, with the intention also, to connect mind and body.

I personally love EFT(emotional freedom technique) energy tapping on acupuncture points while breathing gently to relieve stress, and using positive directed words to gain solutions to any problem. These are just three of the many modalities which use conscious breathing to connect mind and body for positive change. It’s a matter of preference but your breath is always the starting point.

Be Conscious of Your Breath the Body Listens.
Connecting Mind & Body With Conscious Breathing.

Relieving pain.

Breath control helps to slow down the stress response when you experience pain. There’s always an element of stress when you experience pain. When you allow yourself to feel everything, and breathe into any sensation, no matter how heavy, you can finally release it from your body. But this takes practice. When you become conscious of your breath and slow your breath down, you’re telling your body you are safe.  And when your body feels it is safe, it’s like a little switch that releases the chemistry of safety that matches that sensation.

I have personal experience of getting relief from chronic pain, when using conscious breathing and tapping together. It is so empowering to be able to use techniques for self-healing. Yes, the pain returned but not as severe, so I just repeated the slow breathing into the sight of the pain, plus tapping on acupuncture points with great success. Try to feel your sensations as deeply as possible during breathwork then tune into your Intuition and listen to what is going on with your body. Always start with a soft slow breath.

This is not a replacement for medical care, it is a way for you to support yourself along with your medical care.

BONUS EXERCISE.

The Benefits of Humming.

We’ve already discussed the fact that nitric oxide is produced in the nasal sinuses and carried to the lungs during nasal breathing.

What I want to share with you is that HUMMING on the exhales leads to a 15% increase in nitric oxide levels in the nose that helps with both opening up your airways and killing pathogens (infections).

It’s our first line of defense against infection and viruses.

In a book called ( The Humming Effect by Jonathan & Andi Goldman),: https://www.healingsounds.com/product/the-humming-effect-book/#https://www.healingsounds.com/product/the-humming-effect-book/

  • Reduces stress.
  • Enhances sleep
  • Lower heart rate
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Produces neurochemicals such as Oxytocin
  • Releases endorphins and creates new neural pathways in the brain.

All these help to reduce stress and promote well-being.

People generally associated Humming with cheerfulness, and you’ll notice it’s difficult to hum and feel down at the same time.

Humming Exercise.

Here is a simple humming exercise you can do if you feel like you’ve got a cold coming on.

You can do this exercise anytime, as a prevention method and to help boost your immune system.

  • Breath through your nose with your mouth closed and the tip of your tongue resting behind your top front teeth.
  • As you exhale slowly through your nose make a sustained “hmmmmmm”( humming ) sound.
  • Avoid pushing the air out with force.
  • As with everything done with breathing, this should be done gently.
  • Now breathe in gently through your nose and repeat.
  • The sinuses are air-filled cavities located around your nose, face, and eyes that become swollen when you have a cold or flu.
  • To increase the effects of the exercise you can gently massage those points while doing the exercise.
  • When doing the exercise the vibration that the “humming” creates, helps to increase air circulation and the production of Nitric oxide in your nasal & sinus cavities.

I hope you’ll try this, and encourage your children to hum. It’s a cheerful way to prevent you from picking up colds and viruses and to boost your immune system.

When I babysit my grandchildren, I hum a melody for them if they wake up and need comforting. It always works to settle the child. But I didn’t realize until recently that I was also boosting my immune system against viruses while enjoying humming to my grandchildren.

3-STEP EMOTIONAL REGULATION EXERCISE.

elsieredfern@gmail.com · · Leave a Comment

You Have The Power To Choose Your Emotions.

Did you know that you’re the only form of life that can create an emotion because you choose that emotion? How? By learning this 3-step emotional regulation exercise and implementing it.

If you’ve ever been consumed by fear, anger, resentment, happiness, or any other feeling, then you already know that emotions can be powerful. And if you want to learn how to harness the power of your emotions to achieve more happiness in your life. Learn how to choose your emotions with 3- a step emotional regulation exercise.

It’s a fact you are an energetic being as well as a spiritual, mental, and physical being. You have energetic patterns, that fluctuate in vibration and frequency depending on how you are feeling.

Did you know that the average person has approximately 50 trillion cells in their body? Each cell in your body stores information. It also stores energy, releases energy, and receives energy. Your cells are very resilient and can regulate themselves. So we can self-regulate by choice. We can choose how we want to feel,  and natural positive feelings ( high vibrational frequency) are the feelings that release the happy hormones that help our bodies with cell regeneration which can promote longevity. Science and quantum physics have proven this. So if you understand energy, you understand everything. Learning skills and techniques to help you gain awareness of your energy systems is key.

Heart & Brain Coherence.

You Have The Power To Self Regulate

This 3- step emotional regulation exercise will teach you how to self-regulate your emotions and immune response within. This process will help you to adapt and thrive in times like now.

This meditative, 3 step process to holistic health & well-being is powerful. It will help you to release all the lower level emotions, such as fear, worry, anxiety and uncertainty and bring in the higher levels, which are positive, supportive emotions such as peace, gratitude, love, compassion, and joy.

Know that, you can sit down in a moment in time and choose at that moment to self-regulate your body, to awaken a powerful immune response because you chose to. Who doesn’t want a powerful immune response in a world of covid.

Why does it work? Each time you have an emotion- each emotion that you have will change the chemistry in your body, some emotions uplift us and make us feel good and some emotions that do the opposite. The positive emotion like joy, peace, and gratitude, release hormones that create regeneration in your cells and awaken longevity- if you’re living a long time it simply means you’re healing as you are living.

This invites you to think about your body in a very different way from what you learned up to now. You’re not vulnerable and powerless when it comes to immunity and longevity. It’s not about living a long time, it’s about healing as you are living. You do this by managing your energy and choosing positive emotional states, that support cell regeneration.

Shifting Focus, Breath, & Emotions.

We are conditioned to react to what’s happening in the world around us and that is the way we think about emotion, that is normal for us. Each time you have an emotion, you react, through words, thoughts, sensations, and behavior.

By shifting your

  • Focus
  • Breath
  • And Emotions

You will build skills to help you manage any situation when it comes up. What we’re talking about here is our ability to self-regulate. This 3 Step process to holistic health and healing increases your self-awareness, which is key. And that awareness allows you the possibility of changing something that doesn’t feel good!

The Heart Is Where The Beauty Of The Human Spirit Comes ALIVE!

A vital component to this process of connecting heart and mind is the discovery that scientists made back in 1994 – the discovery was that your heart’s nervous system contains 40,000 sensory nerves. Sensory cells are just like you have in your brain.…but these heart cells act independently of the brain in your head..they think, feel, remember, and sense. It gives you the ability to access neurons in your heart for deep states of Intuition & Healing. This discovery also allows you to tap into the ability to transcend suffering and the ability to heal the body quickly.

Our feeling heart has a lot to offer when it comes to our health and well-being. Combining heart and brain coherence is powerful. We may have felt it at times, but now we know why.

“The heart is where the beauty of the human spirit comes alive. Without the ability to feel, friendship and love could never be born. All feeling is born in the heart. That makes the human heart the true jewel of the world.”

~ John O’ Donohue – Benedictus ~

3 – Step Emotional Regulation Exercise.

STEP 1.

I invite you to close your eyes and allow your awareness to go from the world around you to the world within you.

Allowing your awareness to shift from your thinking mind to your feeling heart.

Now place your hand on your heart center. The key here is your awareness will always go to the place of the sensation of touch. So touch your heart center and focus on your heart.

STEP 2.

Becoming aware of your breath and breathing slowly.  First breath,  Inhale slowly and release. Second breath, inhale and release slowly. Third breath, inhale and release slowly. If you can maintain this slow pace your slow breathing will tell your body you’re safe. And when your body feels it is safe it releases hormones that match that sensation of safety.

STEP 3.

I now invite you to do something that is unique to us as human beings – that is to have a feeling that you choose to have,  regardless of what’s going on in the world around you. It is a positive feeling that we want to create such as, love, peace, gratitude, joy, and happiness. And it is that feeling that sends the signal between the heart and the brain.

“For the times we’re in now I’ll choose ” peace ” and to the best of my ability I will focus on the feeling of peace within me and hold that feeling for a few seconds or so”…

You choose your emotion and do the same. Stay with it until you can truly feel it and when you are ready…

Take one more breath and slowly open your eyes and become present in the space you’re in right now.

We All Have The Ability To Self-Regulate

What we’ve done in those 3 steps may seem simple but please don’t be deceived by the simplicity of this 3 step process to holistic health and healing.

Just form this process of 3 minutes, if you do it daily you will

  • Strengthen your immune system
  • You’ll awaken those longevity enzymes that rejuvenate your cells.
  • You’ll strengthen the heart rate, which gives you greater resilience to life.

The truth is you all have the ability to self-regulate when you choose to self-regulate through thought, feeling, breath and focus.

Hope this was helpful for you, to know that you can self-regulate in three easy steps along with gaining more self-awareness. You, I, all of us have an innate wisdom that guides us towards optimal well-being. It has always been there. By combining your feeling heart with your thinking mind you can cope better with life challenges, this is your true guide. We just need to learn some simple skills to tap into our wise selves.

You need to be aware of the signs. and if you can identify signals that you are stressed, you’ll be better able to manage them.

First get support from a professional or GP to help you identify your triggers, and develop coping skills to manage them.

Using complementary therapy like mindfulness, meditation, or EFT tapping can also support your journey to better health and well-being. You will reduce “cortisol” the stress hormone in the body, with tapping. It calms the part of your brain called the amygdala which is firing that fight or flight response in the body.

When you feel calm you can access the part of your brain associated with problem solving and resourcefulness. We don’t have to figure it all out at once, step by step. Get the support you need to prevent and reduce stress and anxiety that interfere with your happiness in life.
